Proud To Make A Difference

SSE has a core purpose: to supply the energy people need in a reliable and sustainable way. SSE is involved in generating, distributing and supplying electricity and gas in addition to the provision of other energy-related services.

SSE have a strong vigorous focus on the health and safety of their employees and are ‘proud to make a difference… on Safety’.  While their approach to safety is impressive, SSE has an in-built organisational mind-set to avoid complacency and seek continual improvement in this area.

Over the past 2 years we have worked with the Safety, Health and Environment Team to design and deliver their annual SHE Conference and associated training resources. In 2015 the Juice team have been delighted to once again, design and deliver a high-impact, interactive and profoundly memorable learning experience for managers and supervisors attending these events.

The Challenge

  • To reinforce the importance of safe driving
  • To highlight the dramatic consequences of road traffic incidents
  • To raise the profile of health and wellbeing within the company and encourage participants to consider the wide range of health issues that may be relevant to them and their teams
  • To explore personal and team resilience and provide participants with tips, ideas and techniques that will help them to do this within their teams

Our Solution

We worked closely with SSE to develop an engaging SHE Conference and resource pack for managers to roll out with their team across the business.
The SHE Conferences took place in Dublin, St Andrews and Oxford and were delivered to over 800 managers and supervisors from across the business. The day was meticulously planned to include interactive activities, engaging pieces of film, a health exhibition and immersive pieces of theatre to create a real impact with the participants.

We worked closely with Jo Clarke from the University of York to design and deliver a resilience session which highlighted some key theories on stress and provided participants with practical ways in which they can increase their personal resilience and that of their teams.

Juice filmed a fictitious story that followed the lead-up to a serious road traffic collision (RTC) involving SSE employees and members of the public. We also portrayed the aftermath – a short film which focused upon the consequences of the accident containing graphic sequences of a crash scenario. This session explored some of the attitudes and behaviours that lead to RTCs; participants were asked to consider whether they display the behaviours of a high-risk or low-risk driver and how this influences their driving behaviours.

The session also encouraged them to focus upon the serious consequences of RTCs and how to avoid them. Additional films which were created included key stakeholder interviews and a series of ‘selfies’ taken by SSE employees outlining what they had done to improve health and safety that they were proud of. These films were used in the conference itself to create impact and spark debate. Live theatre scenarios and a real car wreckage were also utilised to great effect within the conference, creating the impact and memorability required to leave a lasting impression upon delegates.

As participants left, they were given a resource pack to help them to communicate key messages from the conference back to their teams. This included all of the films that had been shown throughout the course of the day, accompanied by ideas for activities and discussion points that session leaders could use to explore the issues exposed at the conference and within the films.
