CEMEX is a global supplier of cement, ready-mixed concrete and aggregates. Their UK operation dates back to 1930 and has a supply network with over 500 locations.

CEMEX has a target of zero injuries. Accident prevention and safeguarding employee health are in place to ensure every employee goes home free from injury at the end of each working day. They aim to achieve zero lost time incidents in the UK and although their target is ambitious, CEMEX is confident this can and will be achieved.

The Challenge

Because the vast majority of incidents at work are caused by unsafe behaviour and the majority are preventable, the biggest challenges any organisation faces are to change habits and encourage people to ‘stop and think’ before carrying out a task.

We were asked to motivate 180 members of staff to take personal ownership for Health and Safety and to contribute to a culture where there is a shared responsibility for safe behaviours. The challenge was made slightly more unusual because the two day-long events were to be delivered in a large marquee; in a quarry!

Our Solution

Our “all-terrain” facilitator Matt Cleve began by really getting to know the organisation and understanding its culture. This involved time at two sites; holding focus groups and spending time with the delegates, managers and the stake-holders.

The result was an unforgettable and highly stimulating session, Matt and our cast of three actors delivered a bespoke workshop encompassing theatrical scenes, interactive exercises and lively discussion. We focussed on fully understanding the human factors that cause accidents, how to positively challenge unsafe behaviour and what each individual can contribute to a culture where safety is a collective responsibility.

Delegate evaluation results

92%  –  agreed that the training would help them have open and honest discussions about health and safety issues

98%  –  recognise the importance of having a positive attitude towards health and safety

97%  –  said that they would adopt a ‘don’t walk by’ mentality
